Mangosteen is a tropical fruit that is grown primarily in hot, humid climates of southeast Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines.
Mangosteen is a dark purple fruit about 2 to 3 inches in diameter – the size of a small peach or apple. Mangosteens are unrelated to mangos.
The Mangoosteen Fruit
How exotic is the mangosteen fruit? It is rumored that Queen Victoria is said to have declared it her favorite fruit and offered a knighthood to anybody who could deliver a supply of mangosteen fruit to her. The mangosteen is so exotic and sought after that it is referred to as "Queen of Fruits" or "Fruit of the Gods."
Mangosteen Origins
While virtually unheard of in the United States and Europe the mangosteen originated deep in the tropical rain forests of southeast Asia in countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand. Unlike traditional fruits which are available year round, the exotic mangosteen bears fruit only 2 times a year.
Mangosteen is similar to other exotic fruits in that it has been traditionally used as a health supplement and pain reliever. But the benefits of the mangosteen fruit go on to help control pain, reduce fever, increase engergy and ward off infections as well as to help protect against disease. While the list of mangosteen benefits goes on and on, the overall deciding factor has been one thing, the taste! Why else would it be classified as the finest fruit in the world?
Heaven for the Body - Heaven for the Tongue
"A sweet-tart melding of elegance and opulence that had echoes of fruit of every climate." - This is just one reference on how the exotic the mangosteen fruit is. There is no other fruit on the planet that combines the distinctly beautiful taste and overwhelming health benefits as that of the mangosteen!
The Mangosteen fruit is composed of the following:
- Pericarp (rind or skin)- it is smooth, 4-8mm thick with a dark purple color
- Pulp (fruit) - consists of 4-8 snowy white colored segments. It is soft & juicy with an exquisite unforgettable taste.
- Seeds - one mangosteen fruit usually contains 2-3 well-developed seeds ranging between 1.5 and 2.5 cm in length.
